Discovering Roman Britain by David E. Johnston,

Discovering Roman Britain by David E. Johnston,
This book is a comprehensive visitors' guide to Roman sites in England, Scotland, Wales and the Channel Islands. David E. Johnston, Staff Tutor in Archaeology in the Department of Adult Education, Southampton University, has written an introductory section including a historical outline of Roman Britain and a description of the various types of site included, thus setting the scene for the gazetteer of sites which follows. Major sites include towns, fortresses, temples and villas. Rural settlements and landscape features such as Celtic fields and roads are noted where the remains repay a visit. Less familiar items like Roman barrows, mausolea, practice camps and canals are included, as well as hillforts that were occupied during the Roman period. National grid references and directions for finding the sites are given. The text has been updated for this second edition and several additional sites have been included.

Sandbank, Scotland - Sandbank is a village in Argyll and Bute, Scotland, north of Dunoon. It sits on the southern shore of the Holy Loch, and was the site of the shore facilities of the US submarine base in the Holy Loch from the 1960s to 1992.

Culloden, Scotland - Culloden (from Gaelic Cul loden, "back of the pond") is the name of a village five miles east of Inverness, Scotland and the surrounding area. Three miles south of the village is Drummossie Moor (often called Culloden Moor), site of the Battle of Culloden.

Huntly, Scotland - Huntly is a town in Aberdeenshire in Scotland, formerly known as Milton of Strathbogie. It has a population of about 4000 and is the site of Huntly Castle.

Gogarburn - Gogarburn is an area on the western edge of Edinburgh, lying between the City of Edinburgh bypass and the airport, which previously was the site of Gogarburn mental hospital, but now hosts the newly built global headquarters of the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS). The Gogarburn site was bought by RBS in June 2001.
